Conor McGregor has a lot of thoughts on the lightweight division after UFC 249, and he expressed them Monday.
The biggest takeaway from it all, though, is that McGregor (22-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) is willing to return to the octagon without fans sooner rather than later, and thinks he will facing newly minted interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje (22-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC).
McGregor’s tangent on Twitter hit on a number of different topics and fighters, but off the top he made his intentions to face Gaethje next quite clear, saying he would get the fight before Gaethje gets a unifier with champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0 MMA, 12-0 UFC).
The fans make the sport!
Watching the other night I was against going in without them. But it will be my fucking pleasure to display the power I possess with zero background noise for them.
Its me and Justin next as khabib is the biggest bottle fighter in the game.
Gaethje’s win at UFC 249 came against Tony Ferguson (25-4 MMA, 15-2 UFC), who had his lightweight division record 12-fight winning streak snapped. McGregor, who used to share the same management team as “El Cucuy,” offered some backhanded thoughts about Ferguson after his defeat.
I love Tony. We represented him amazingly at Paradigm sports and were betrayed for a promise of a baseball contract. But frame and preparation here was just embarrassing. His methods and conversation are humorous/enjoyable but he was never the level perceived. Although tough.
“The Notorious” then moved on what to what he thinks should be next for Ferguson in defeat. His chance at a lightweight title unifier with Nurmagomedov were temporarily derailed, and McGregor said he’d like to see Ferguson move on to a showdown with another top 155-pound fight in Dustin Poirier’s (28-5 MMA, 17-5 UFC), who McGregor also dissed.
It is Dustin/Tony next when Tony heals.
If he does. Dustin will beat him also if changes are not made. Which they won’t. Dustin, although game, and in the mix, will be fed to the floor again. Couple wins here/there then folded in half. Rinse and repeat – Dustin career.
McGregor then circled back to Gaethje, whom he now seems to be have an issue with. Gaethje has criticized McGregor in the past and took issue with his repeated outside-the-octagon mishaps. McGregor hasn’t forgot, and fired back.
Justin, there is no danger in a man that hugs legs, we all know. Try and dance around what the real threat is here all you want.
I am going to fucking butcher you.
Your teeth. I’m going to put them on a fucking necklace.
Speak on my skills as a father?
You are fucking dead.
Don’t ever say you represent the great nation of the United States of America ever again. No true American would speak so highly of, or allow, a convicted member of a Jihadi terror cell represent them.
You are a fucking blind fool, and I am going to finish the job.
McGregor couldn’t stop tweeting before taking a shot at Nurmagomedov. He’s already gone after his rival for not being able to fight on the April 18 version of UFC 249 due to the coronavirus pandemic, and he doubled down again.
Khabib you absolute embarrassment. Scurrying, hiding rat as usual. As I have said many times. As has been seen many times. Through the pane of glass it was confirmed what was always known.
“No comment” lol.
An embarrassment to real fighting.
McGregor ended his rant by noting that all these potential lightweight fights are merely a pitstop. He is coming for the welterweight division, too, and made his intentions for that known.
After this division demolition job.
It is 170lbs.
